A relative in a nursing home pays $4K a month. The aids and nurses are great, but they say they are low-paid. The place is clean, but the food is crappy and cheap. The doctor only visits once a month. There are minimal activities for the residents to keep their minds active. Most of them sit in front of TVs all day.
I would like to see their balance sheet or an income statement, or at least find out what the owners and directors are paid.
The facility is in Illinois and they are private. So how can I get hold of their tax filings?

You can’t. That’s what “private” means.

You can’t find out that sort of financial information. However, in Illinois you can indeed request quite a bit of information about any long term care facility. Simply send a written request to the Public Information Officer, Illinois Department of Public Health, 535 W. Jefferson St., Springfield, IL 62761. Ask for the facility’s most recent licensure application, statement of ownership, and for the all surveys of all kinds conducted in the past 24 months, plus any and all responses from the facility. That information will tell you a LOT! Be sure to include your full name and address, and a daytime telephone number in case the information office needs to call for any clarification.
