My (adult) sister is living in our home and suffers from a dibilitating disease so my wife is talking care of her full time. Because of this she is unable to work to generate an income. Do we qualify for any tax relief thru the IRS?

Other than the possiblity of your sister being a dependent, there is no income tax benefit available for the situation you describe.
There may be some benefits available from your state or county to provide income to your wife as your sister’s caregiver. CA has one but it was everly curtailed to to CA’s budget woes.

In addition of being your dependent. you can only claim a % of your expense on the form 2441. Remember if you are receiving some compensation on her behalf, you have to count that towards the calculation of support. It is the 5th element on Internal Revenue Code 152

Your sister can be your dependent as Qualifying relative if she lived with you all the year and did not earn more than $3500 in 2008.
